The psychoanalysts Newman and Berkowitz said: “people will go to plenty of trouble to learn French or physics or underwater diving. They have the tolerance to learn the way to operate an automobile, but they cannot be bothered to learn how to operate themselves”.

This quotation focusses the spotlight on one of the major missed opportunities in the academic field. If educationalists made the effort to teach those in their charge to operate themselves more successfully surely it would improve the standard of their learning.

I was, at best , an unexceptional student. The only subjects at which I was able to get anything like even modest grades were the ones that captured my imagination. As a certain result of my poor grades, and consequent lack of confidence, my career suffered.

It was not until I discovered NLP techniques for improving my self-image and my ability to exploit my creative gifts that my career started to make progress.

It was unfortunate that at the time I was in the education system there weren’t any tests for dyslexia that has been a bane of my life. However , it has never prevented me from creating a successful career in business coaching.

The reason I have been able to make dramatic changes in my career path is because I am now in a position to make best use of my inborn gifts.

In my case I was lucky to discover NLP at a critical time in my life. The discovery was driven by the constant nagging pain of believing that I was as good as the next employee and the frustration of not being able to find ways to demonstrate my talents to employment agencies. It was only when I found a route that worked for me that my career took off.

My questions are these: “why was it down to me to have to find the way to operate myself effectively? Why did the smart folks in the education system not teach me the techniques I wanted to be have the capability to make the best of my abilities? “.
